My client, Hostgrown, needed to build a website for a Guatemalan school. They hired me to provide the graphical design and XHTML and CSS code for the site.

Some suggestions that I received:

• "avoid corporate look"
• "should not be boring"
• "can be related to traveling"
• "can be related to the Guatemala country"
• "can be related to the ancient Maya civilization"

As I didn't know much about the Maya civilization (or anything about Guatemala), I started by spending a couple of hours reading on Wikipedia and looking at Maya related images.

I received the designs in Photoshop .psd format from my client along with detailed specifications of what the sites should consist of and how should they function.

A few site specific customizations that the projects implied:

• building the Joomla templates as per received psd files
• customized image galleries for product display along with prices and enqire links
• email newsletter subscription functionality (a printscreen of the backend can be viewed in the 3rd image)
• different headers for each page/category
• either random or page specific display of testimonial article

My client had a lot of php websites with hundreds of pages each that he wanted to sell. He needed them to be easy installable, modular and extendable and also needed new designs for some of them.

My job was to modify the Joomla installer package so that the result of an installation would be the desired Joomla site with the right articles (from the original php files), the right modules and the right template.
